Hogan Cup final: St Colman’s Newry 2-14 Colaiste Eoin (Dublin) 1-7

St Colman's sixth success in a Hogan Cup final was a triumph of skill and class over brawn.

St Colman's joint-boss Ray Morgan claimed he almost gasped before the match when he saw the broad-shouldered Dubliners limbering up.

And for the first 15 minutes, it appeared that Colaiste Eoin’s imposing physique might tell against a Colman’s team that seemed a tad nervous.

But gradually the Newry school’s midfielders, in particular John Fegan, got the measure of their men and the match turned irrevocably.

If there was one thing that gave Colman’s comfort during their slightly dodgy opening quarter, it was the form of livewire corner-forward Noel McElvanna. The Lissummon youngster went on to produce a truly magnificent display.

Colman’s joint-manager Peter McGrath remarked afterwards that McElvanna had been inspiring.

Others such as full-back Michael Feeney, John Fegan, Aidan Cole and the midfielder’s cousin, Aidan Fegan, also produced heroics on the biggest day of their footballing lives but McElvanna was the catalyst of this marvellous Violet Hill triumph.

All-Ireland B Colleges final: Abbey Tipperary 1-13 St Louis Ballymena 0-10

ooooooOOOOOoooooo

SUPERIOR forward play saw Abbey CBS of Tipperary see off the challenge of St Louis, Ballymena in the All-Ireland B Colleges football decider at Croke Park.

The scoring contribution of Abbey half-forwardd Damien O’Brien was significant.

The Tipperary minor hit seven of his team’s tally, including several from long-range.

St Louis, producing their best spell of the match, drew level midway through the second half thanks to Paddy Logan, Ruairi O’Loan and Kevin Carey points.

But any hopes St Louis had of another win were effectively extinguished when Diarmuid O’Hanlon finished soccer-style to the net after good work from O’Brien and Hanly.

Abbey: D Holmes, M Cosgrave, L Leonard, V Murphy, D Fogarty, P Duggan, R O’Grady, J Morrissey, G Stapleton, D O’Brien (0-7), N O’Shea (0-1), M Hanly (0-2), D O’Halloran (1- 0), J Harty, P Leonard (0-2).

Sub: E Grace (0-1) for Harty (24 mins).

A CONTROVERSIAL series of adverts for a new GAA magazine has been withdrawn after complaints from the public, it was revealed yesterday.

The adverts for a Gaelic games magazine backed by the GAA and RTE among others, featured a man talking in a depressed state about being hooked.

The viewer and listener are given the impression that the ad deals with drug addiction until at the last minute it is revealed the actor is talking about the GAA.

People who complained about the campaign argued it indicated the use of drugs.

But a spokesman for the magazine said: “We were setting out to convey something very modern with a sense of humour, like the magazine itself.”

A replacement ad campaign has already been organised
