1741: George Stevenson became the first fighter to lose his life as a direct result of a prize fight. He died after a bout with Jack Broughton at Taylor's Booth, Tottenham Court Road, London.

1897: Batley beat St Helens 10-3 in front of 13,492 fans at Headingley to win the first Northern Union Cup (now the Challenge Cup).

1992: Tottenham's Gary Lineker received the Football Writers' Player of the Year award for the second time. He first won it in 1986, while at Everton.

2013: Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was given a 10-game ban by the Football Association after biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

2016: Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge won the men's London Marathon in a course record time (two hours three minutes, five seconds), while Jemima Sumgong of Kenya won the women's race (2hrs 22mins, 58secs).

2017: Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League after a 4-1 win against Preston.
