1930: Leicester and Arsenal drew 6-6 in the old First Division, watched by 27,241 fans at Filbert Street.

1990: Rangers clinched the Scottish championship for the 40th time by winning 1-0 at Dundee United.

1996: Manchester United's Eric Cantona was voted player of the year by the Football Writers' Association.

2007: It was a bad day for Ulster sides as Monaghan and Cavan lost Division Two semi-finals to Meath and Roscommon respectively.

2010: Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch died at the age of 89.

2012: Cavan exited the All-Ireland U-21 Football Championship at the semi-final stage after a 2-7 to 2-2 loss to Roscommon.

2013: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez attracted criticism after biting Branislav Ivanovic on the arm in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Anfield. The Uruguayan was later charged with violent conduct by the Football Association, who handed Suarez a 10-match ban.

2013: Celtic retained the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title after a 4-1 victory against Inverness.

2017: British gymnast Ellie Downie won the gold medal in the women's all-around competition at the European Championships in Cluj.
