On This Day: Apr 18 2013: Six-time Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy retires

ON THIS DAY IN SPORT

1903: Bury registered the biggest winning margin in FA Cup final history when they beat Derby 6-0 at Crystal Palace.

1942: Racing driver Jochen Rindt was born. He was the first, and to date only, posthumous Formula One world champion. In 1970, the Austrian driver was killed during practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. He was leading the world championship standings at the time and his points total was not overtaken.

1958: West Indian pace bowler Malcolm Marshall was born. He became the second West Indian, after Lance Gibbs, to take 300 Test wickets. He died in 1999.

1994: Cricketer Brian Lara scored 375 runs against England, then a record score in Test Cricket. His feat was broken by Matthew Hayden in 2003 who scored 380 against Zimbabwe, but Lara reclaimed his record a year later when he became the first Test batsman to achieve a quadruple century.

2002: The International Rugby Board confirmed Australia would act as sole hosts for the 2003 World Cup, upholding the controversial move to axe New Zealand as co-hosts because of a row over advertising.

2007: UEFA awarded Poland and Ukraine the right to jointly host the European Championships in 2012.

2010: UEFA confirmed the week's Champions League semi-final first legs were to go ahead as scheduled despite the restrictions on European air travel due to a volcanic ash cloud.

2011: Toulon announced they had suspended Wales international Gavin Henson for one week following a breach of club discipline. He left the club in May 2011.

2012: Chelsea won the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. The Blues went on to lift the trophy for the first time in their history, after defeating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.

2013: Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, winner of six Olympic gold medals, announced his retirement.

2014: The England and Wales Cricket Board and Warwickshire announced that Jonathan Trott would take an indefinite break from all cricket after suffering a repeat of the stress-related illness which forced his early departure from the 2013-14 Ashes series.

2016: Directors David Bernstein and Mervyn King quit Aston Villa to plunge the relegated club deeper into a crisis. The pair resigned just 48 hours after Villa were relegated from the Premier League.

Wojciech Szczesny (soccer) - Juventus and Poland goalkeeper, formerly with Arsenal goalkeeper, born 1990.

Divock Origi (soccer) - Liverpool and Belgium forward on loan at Wolfsburg, born 1995.
