ON THIS DAY

1916: The Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) was established in New York.

1929: The first British world motor racing champion Mike Hawthorn was born. Less than six months after winning the title, in 1958, he was killed in a car crash in Surrey.

1989: Nick Faldo won his first Masters title, beating Scott Hoch in a play-off at the second extra hole in Augusta.

2002: England captain David Beckham suffered a broken foot during Manchester United's Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna, sparking fears he would not be fit for the World Cup. However, the midfielder recovered to lead his country out against Sweden in Saitama on June 2.

2007: Manchester United produced one of their best ever European performances to thrash Roma 7-1 in the Champions League quarter-final second leg for an 8-3 aggregate success. The win was marred by crowd trouble outside Old Trafford before kick-off.
