McDevitt Cup Final: St Joseph’s, Coalisland 2-7 St Mary’s, Limavady 0-5

ST JOSEPH’S collected their second Ulster Vocational Schools title in four years beating St Mary’s High School in the replayed final at windswept Dean McGlinchey Park, Ballinascreen yesterday.

The Coalisland boys, who were most fortunate to gain a draw in Dungannon almost a month ago, made no mistake this time.

St Mary’s to their credit fought hard throughout.

Twice the upright and once the crossbar denied them vital scores while David Graham in the Coalisland goals brought off a brilliant save from Shane McAteer at a stage when the Limavady boys were pressing strongly.

Stephen McNeice and Gerard Toner ruled midfield for St Joseph’s.

The winners had strong defenders in full back Alan Fox, Colm Donnelly and Conor Hamilton while in attack Peter McCahan, Patrick Earley and Willie Whitehouse impressed.

St Mary’s had a star defender in left half back Damhnaic McFeeley ably assisted by Niall O’Connor and James O’Connor.

In attack, Sean Brolly, Ruairi Higgins and John McElhinney worked hard.

TYRONE'S dual player Vinnie Owens has switched his allegiance back to the county’s hurlers and is a shock inclusion in the side for Sunday’s National League Section 2B tie against Kildare at Omagh.

Owens, a member of the Ulster Railway Cup hurling side in 1996, had been concentrating on his football career during the past two seasons, and last played for Danny Ball’s team in the National Football League tie against Dublin earlier this month.

Hurling manager Brendan Harkin has named him at left-half forward for Sunday’s game, but he is likely to line out at midfield.

WAYNE McCULLOUGH’S warm-up diet for this summer’s red-hot WBC world super-bantam title clash with Erik Morales of Mexico has been switched from American home-made to Italian.

The 27-year-old former undefeated world bantamweight champion is moving up in class of opponent for next month’s ring comeback in Uncasville, Connecticut.

A matter of days after being matched with US superfeatherweight journeyman Mike Juarez, his promoter Matt Tinley has looked to Europe’s flyweight division for a better quality test.

Luigi Camputaro, who held the European flyweight title during the mid-1990s, has been signed-up to take on McCullough instead.
