1868: The first athletics meeting of any description to be held in the United States took place indoors at the Empire Skating Rink, New York.



1986: Pakistan's Jahangir Khan lost his first match since 1981 when he went down to Ross Norman in the final of the World Open Squash Championship.



1990: Monica Seles beat Gabriela Sabatini 6-4 5-7 3-6 6-4 6-2 in the final of the Virginia Slims Championship in New York. It was the first five-set match in a major women's event since the 1901 US Championship doubles.

2005: Australia's co-captain Chris Johnson was suspended for five international games for his actions during the Second Test against Ireland on October 28.



2008: Dutchman John Metgod was unveiled as Portsmouth's first-team coach. Both he and manager Tony Adams were dismissed less than four months later.



2011: London was awarded the right to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships after beating off competition from Qatar capital Doha.

2012: Crossmaglen eased into another Ulster semi-final following a 3-11 to 1-7 win over St Eunan’s, Kyle Carragher, Aaron Kernan and Paul Og Grant with the goals for the Armagh side.



2013: Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-4 to win the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at London's O2 Arena.



2015: Stuart Lancaster paid the price for England's dismal Rugby World Cup campaign by stepping down as head coach.



2016: Scotland made history as they became the first of the minnows to claim a Four Nations point after snatching a deserved 18-18 draw from a dramatic match with New Zealand.
