1878: Two local teams took part in the first football match under floodlights at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.



1996: Mark Bosnich, then of Aston Villa, was charged with misconduct by the Football Association after his 'Basil Fawlty' impersonation at Tottenham, which had angered Spurs' Jewish following. The Australian claimed he had not realised his Nazi-style salute had been offensive.



2000: Jim McLean resigned as chairman and managing director of Dundee United following the fall-out from a violent altercation with a television reporter during a live interview.



2004: Female teams from the USA and Britain played a special exhibition camogie match.



2005: Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane announced he was to quit international football.

2006: At a GAA Special Congress, the Tommy Murphy Cup was introduced.



2007: Dromore essed to the Tyrone county title with a 0-14 to 0-4 win over Coalisland.



2009: Former Great Britain and Wigan coach Brian Noble was unveiled as the new head coach of the Crusaders.

2010: Ireland manager Anthony Tohill announced his Ireland squad for the International Series against Australia. Stevie McDonnell was appointed captain.

2013: Surrey appointed Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford as their new head coach.



2014: Northern Ireland beat Greece 2-0 in Athens with goals from Jamie Ward and Kyle Lafferty to boost their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016. Michael O'Neill's side sealed their place at the finals in October 2015.
