1811: The first inter-county women's cricket match took place - between Hampshire and Surrey. The encounter was held at Newington.

1996: UEFA announced an extra place for clubs in England - and seven other countries - as the top European competitions expanded.

1999: Gus Poyet scored after just 27 seconds as Chelsea hammered Manchester United 5-0 at Stamford Bridge. But the Red Devils had the last laugh as Sir Alex Ferguson's men went on to win the Premiership title by 18 points, with Chelsea in fifth.

2007: Celtic's 2-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League ended in drama after Milan goalkeeper Dida fell theatrically following a mild tap on the face by a Celtic fan celebrating the last-minute winner.

2010: The Ryder Cup, which was being held at Celtic Manor in Wales, was disrupted due to heavy rain. The competition ended up finishing on the Monday.

2015: Hosts England were knocked out of the Rugby World Cup after losing 33-13 to Australia at Twickenham.

2016: Heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury announced he was retiring from boxing, then tweeted that he was in fact "here to stay" three hours later.
