1981: Sebastian Coe broke the mile world record for the third time in Brussels. The record of three minutes and 47.33 seconds stood for four years until it was broken by Steve Cram.

1989: Manchester United broke the transfer record between two British clubs by paying Middlesbrough £2.3million for defender Gary Pallister.

1999: Ruud Gullit resigned as Newcastle manager, a year to the day after he took over at St James' Park.

2004: Jason Gardener, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis won gold for Great Britain in the Olympic men's 4x100m relay final in Athens.

2006: Roy Keane signed his contract to officially start work as Sunderland manager. The former Manchester United midfielder took the Black Cats from bottom of the Championship to title winners during the course of the season.

2007: Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced his retirement from football. The Norway international famously scored the winning goal for United in stoppage time of their 1999 Champions League final clash with Bayern Munich. He had a spell in charge of Cardiff in 2014.

2009: Charles Jillings resigned as Harlequins chairman following the 'Bloodgate' scandal. Quins director of rugby Dean Richards ordered winger Tom Williams to fake a blood injury in the dying minutes of a Heineken Cup tie in the 2008-09 season.

2011: Defending champion Usain Bolt was disqualified after false-starting in the final of the 100 metres at the World Championships in Daegu. His fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake won the title.

2014: England manager Roy Hodgson announced Wayne Rooney would become the new captain of the national side.

2015: Great Britain enjoyed a record-breaking night at the World Championships as Shara Proctor leapt over seven metres en route to long jump silver and Dina Asher-Smith became the world's fastest-ever teenager over 200 metres.

Tottenham completed the £22million signing of South Korean forward Son Heung-min from German club Bayer Leverkusen.
