ON THIS DAY 

1875: Captain Matthew Webb made history by becoming the first man to swim the English Channel. He covered the 21 miles from Dover to Calais in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

1928: Liverpool's famous Kop was opened before the First Division match with Bury. The Reds celebrated by winning the match 3-0.

1964: Worcestershire clinched cricket's County Championship for the first time with victory over Gloucestershire.

1999: Sunderland enjoyed a famous 2-1 win at arch-rivals Newcastle. United boss Ruud Gullit left striker Alan Shearer on the bench as his side went down to goals from Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips.

2004: Arsenal set a new English top-flight record of 43 matches unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Blackburn at Highbury.

2007: St Helens beat Catalan Dragons 30-8 in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley. The French outfit were the first non-English team to reach the showpiece.

2013: England drew the fifth Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval, having already secured a 3-0 series victory.

2014: Liverpool sealed one of the shock signings of the summer after announcing Mario Balotelli's arrival from AC Milan in a reported £16million deal.
