Rod Laver (tennis) - Australian who is the only player to win all four grand slam events in the same season on two occasions, achieving the feat in 1962 and 1969, born 1938.

Roy Hodgson (soccer) - Former England manager, born 1947.

Deion Sanders (American football/baseball) - two-time Super Bowl winner and Pro Football hall-of-famer, the only player ever to score an NFL touchdown and hit a major league baseball home run in the same week, born 1967.

Davide Rebellin (cycling) - Italian rider who won an unprecedented treble of the Amstel Gold Race, La Fleche Wallonne and the Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2004 but failed a drug test at the 2008 Olympics, born 1971.

Filippo Inzaghi (soccer) - Former AC Milan head coach and player and former Italy striker, now coach of Serie B side Venezia, born 1973.

Mikael Silvestre (soccer) - Former Manchester United, Arsenal and France defender, born 1977.

Tyson Gay (athletics) - American sprinter, a former world champion in 100 metres and 200 metres. Tested positive for a banned substance in May 2013 and subsequently accepted a one-year ban, born 1982.

Willian (soccer) - Chelsea and Brazil midfielder, born 1988.

Stefano Okaka (soccer) - Watford's Italian striker, born 1989.

2008: Jason Ryan’s Wexford cause a shock as they beat Armagh in the All-Ireland quarter-final, a first ever Championship win over the Orchard.

1984: British decathlete Daley Thompson set a new world record of 8,847 points to retain his Olympic title in Los Angeles.

1990: Joe Mercer, who guided Manchester City to the league title in 1968, died aged 76.

2000: Italian striker Benito Carbone signed a four-year contract for Premier League club Bradford on a free transfer from Aston Villa for a reported salary of £40,000 a week.

2002: Bradford, now with debts of £36million and in administration, were granted permission to play their opening game of the season against Wolves after the Football League received assurances over a proposed financial rescue package.

2003: Manchester United youngster Jimmy Davis was killed in a car crash on his way to play on loan for Watford against Coventry. The game was postponed as a mark of respect for the 21-year-old.

2004: West Brom striker Lee Hughes was jailed for six years after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at Coventry Crown Court.

2007: England spinner Ashley Giles, who was part of the 2005 Ashes-winning side, retired from cricket.

2010: Martin O'Neill resigned as Aston Villa manager.

2012: Britain's Nicola Adams became the first woman boxing champion in Olympic history after taking gold in the the women's flyweight division and shortly afterwards Katie Taylor won Ireland's first gold of the London Games by winning the women's lightweight division.

2016: Manchester United announced the £89million signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus on a five-year contract with the option of a sixth season.

2016: England defender John Stones completed his £47.5million move to Manchester City from Everton by signing a six-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.
