1884: Lord's cricket ground hosted its first Test when it staged the second match in the series between England and Australia. England won by an innings and five runs.

1964: Tottenham forward John White was killed when he was struck by lightning while sheltering from a storm during a round of golf on the links at Crews Hill, Enfield.

1968: Arnold Palmer became the first man to win one million US dollars on the American golf tour when he tied for second place in the US PGA Championship at Pecan Valley, Texas.

1981: England won a remarkable third Ashes Test by 18 runs at Headingley. Ian Botham had taken six wickets in Australia's first innings and made an unbeaten 149 in England's second (following on) before the tourists were dismissed for 111. The hosts went on to win the series - widely known as 'Botham's Ashes' - 3-1.

1991: David Platt completed a £5.5million move from Aston Villa to Bari.

2003: Damien Duff confirmed a £17million move to Chelsea from Blackburn.

2004: Newcastle completed the signing of Patrick Kluivert from Barcelona.

2008: Petr Cech signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea, the same day they agreed to sell Claude Makelele to Paris St Germain and Khalid Boulahrouz to Stuttgart.

2010: Midfielder Joe Cole completed a move to Liverpool from Chelsea on a four-year deal.

2012: South Africa captain Graeme Smith marked his 100th Test by scoring 131 on day three of the first Test against England at The Oval.

2012: Former Yorkshire and England spinner Don Wilson died at the age of 74.

2013: England beat Australia by 347 runs in the second Investec Ashes Test at Lord's to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

2014: England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard announced he was retiring from international football after earning 114 caps over 14 years.
