Michael O'Neill wants fans to support Uefa Women's U19 Championship

Neil Loughran

MICHAEL O’Neill has called on fans to come out in force to support the Uefa Women’s U19 Championship, which takes place in Northern Ireland in August.

Along with the hosts, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, England, Netherlands and Scotland will all compete in the prestigious tournament, which takes place from August 8-20.

Northern Ireland boss O’Neill was there as the official draw was made at Belfast’s City Hall yesterday, with Alfie Wylie’s side drawn in Group A alongside Germany, Spain and Scotland.

They take on the Spaniards first on August 8, before clashes against Scotland on August 11 and finally the Germans on August 14.

And O’Neill says it is crucial that fans get behind the competition.

He said: “The girls have put a fabulous amount of work into it, and we need to get more of these events here.

“We’ve got a stadium now which is fit to host this type of event, and what makes these kind of events a success is the organisation – the association has done a great job with that – and the quality of the teams that will come; we’re seeing the best U19 girls in Europe coming to play here. It’s a great chance for our girls to play against them.

“But the most important thing is that people support it – that’s what all these countries that come here take away from it, the experience of what the crowd brings to the tournament.

“I’m extremely optimistic that it’ll get great support from the people of Northern Ireland and hopefully it’s the first of many of these types of events.”
