1949: American tennis player Gussie Moran caused a stir at Wimbledon when she appeared wearing lace-trimmed knickers designed by Teddy Tinling. The All England Club was so outraged that Tinling was not a welcome visitor for 33 years.

1960: Floyd Patterson knocked out Sweden's Ingemar Johansson in the fifth round at the New York Polo Grounds to become the first man to regain boxing's world heavyweight title. Patterson had lost his crown to the Swede a year earlier.

1987: New Zealand beat France 22-9 in Auckland to become the first winners of the rugby union World Cup.

2006: Michael Owen was carried off on a stretcher with a ruptured knee ligament in England's 2-2 draw with Sweden in their group match at the World Cup in Germany. He was out of action for almost a year.

2008: Dutch club FC Twente named former England manager Steve McClaren as their new coach. McClaren led Twente to the Eredivisie title in 2010.

2010: The France squad refused to train after declaring their opposition to the decision to send home Nicolas Anelka from the World Cup in South Africa.

2011: FIFA confirmed that its vice-president Jack Warner, who had been accused of bribery in the run-up to the FIFA presidential vote, had resigned from all football activity.

2012: Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba confirmed he was joining Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

2013: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father Jorge were ordered to attend a court hearing as part of an inquiry into alleged tax fraud.

2014: West Brom signed defender Joleon Lescott from Manchester City on a two-year contract.

2016: Ched Evans, who was jailed in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old woman before the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction in April, signed a 12-month contract with Chesterfield.
