1930: Max Schmelling became the first and only man to become world heavyweight champion via a disqualification against American Jack Sharkey.
2000: England surrendered a two-goal lead as they lost 3-2 to Portugal in their opening game of Euro 2000 in Eindhoven.
2004: Ricky Hatton made a successful 13th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title by defeating Argentinian Carlos Vilches.
2005: Irish boxer Kevin McBride defeated Mike Tyson when the former world heavyweight champion retired on his stool at the end of the sixth round in Washington.
2006: Celtic's former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane announced his retirement from football on medical grounds.
2007: Jamaican police confirmed they believed Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer died of natural causes and was not murdered as first thought.
2009: Manor Grand Prix, Campos Grand Prix and Team US F1 were accepted as new Formula One teams.
2010: Goalkeeper Robert Green's error handed the United States an equaliser as England drew their World Cup Group C opener 1-1 in Rustenberg.
2014: Midfielder Cesc Fabregas signed for Chelsea from Barcelona on a five-year deal.
2015: England seamer James Anderson and former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard were both awarded OBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, while Jonny Wilkinson picked up a CBE and Welsh rugby great Gareth Edwards received a knighthood.
