1985: A fire at Valley Parade, home of Bradford, claimed the lives of 56 people in a match against Lincoln which was supposed to be a celebration of the Bantams' Third Division championship that season.

2003: West Ham were relegated from the Premiership after a 2-2 draw with Birmingham on the final day of the season. Bolton's 2-1 win over Middlesbrough ensured their survival.

2008: Manchester United secured the Premier League title, their 10th under Sir Alex Ferguson and 17th overall, with a 2-0 win at Wigan.

2009: Richard Gasquet was suspended by the International Tennis Federation after the Frenchman confirmed he had tested positive for cocaine. He was later cleared after protesting it entered his system after kissing a girl in a nightclub.

2010: West Ham sacked Gianfranco Zola, while former England boss Steve McClaren was appointed Wolfsburg coach.

2011: The funeral of golf great Seve Ballesteros was held in his home village of Pedrena in Spain. Ballesteros died following a battle with a brain tumour.

2012: Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was named the Barclays Premier League's manager of the season.

2013: Ben Watson's last-minute header gave Wigan the FA Cup for the first time in their history as they provided one of the competition's great upsets by beating Manchester City at Wembley.

2014: Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany scored as Manchester City reclaimed the Barclays Premier League title with a 2-0 win over West Ham.

2016: Sunderland claimed a 3-0 victory against Everton to secure their Premier League status and relegate both Newcastle and Norwich.

2016: Bill Beaumont was elected chairman of World Rugby, taking up office from July 1.
