ON THIS DAY
1923: Bolton and West Ham contested the first FA Cup final at Wembley. Official receipts gave the attendance as 126,047 but it is estimated more than 200,000 were in the ground. A single policeman on a white horse famously kept the crowd back from the pitch. Bolton won the game 2-0.
1984: Clive Lloyd became the first West Indian to play in 100 Test matches as the fifth Test against Australia got under way in Jamaica.
1990: Wigan's Andy Gregory became only the second rugby league player to win the Lance Todd Trophy a second time. He was awarded the coveted prize as man of the match for his contribution to Wigan's triumph over Warrington in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
1998: West Brom terminated the contract of defender Shane Nicholson following his admission of a drugs misconduct charge at a Football Association hearing.
2006: Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari claimed he had withdrawn from the race to become England manager after the World Cup. Steve McClaren eventually took over following the departure of Sven-Goran Eriksson.
2007: Australia won a historic third cricket World Cup in a row, defeating Sri Lanka by 53 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method in Barbados.
2009: Stephen Hendry scored his second Crucible maximum, in a 13-11 quarter-final defeat by Shaun Murphy.
2013: Gareth Bale won the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, matching a feat only previously achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo and Andy Gray.
2016: It emerged that British cyclist Simon Yates had tested positive for Terbutaline during the Paris-Nice race. He escaped a ban after his team Orica-GreenEdge admitted responsibility, having failed to apply for a therapeutic use exemption for Yates' asthma inhaler.
