Former Galway footballer Padraic Joyce celebrates his 40th birthday today

1933: Walter Hammond set what was then a world Test match record when he made 336 not out against New Zealand at Auckland - an innings which included 10 sixes.

1990: The Rangers v Celtic match from Ibrox was the first British league game to be broadcast on satellite, by BSB, in this country.

2002: Halifax, previously demoted in 1993, became the first club ever to be relegated twice from the Football League to the Conference following a 5-0 hammering by Darlington.

2003: Francis Jeffers scored his 13th goal in as many England Under-21s appearances to equal a record set by Alan Shearer.

2007: Spain's Pablo Martin-Benavides became the first amateur to win a European Tour title with victory at the Portuguese Open.

2009: Newcastle appointed former striker Alan Shearer as their coach for the final eight matches of the 2008-09 season, but he was unable to save them from relegation to the Championship.

2013: Sunderland issued a statement on behalf of their new head coach Paolo Di Canio in which the Italian defended himself against controversy over his political beliefs.

2014: Tiger Woods announced he would miss the Masters after undergoing successful microdiscectomy surgery on a pinched nerve.

2016: British sailor Sarah Young died aged 40 after being swept into the ocean while competing in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.
