1948: The BBC televised its first steeplechase horse race, with Sandown Park the venue.

1982: The San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 to win Super Bowl XVI. It was the first of five wins for the 49ers, who dominated American football in the 1980s.

1992: Monica Seles, then of Yugoslavia, won her second successive Australian Open title when she beat American Mary-Jo Fernandez 6-2 6-3.

2000: Rivaldo was voted FIFA's World Player of the Year ahead of David Beckham and Gabriel Batistuta.

2005: Former England captain Martin Johnson announced his retirement from all competitive rugby.

2007: Wales midfielder Simon Davies completed a move from Everton to Fulham for an undisclosed fee, ending an 18-month spell at Goodison Park.

2011: Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray were stood down from duty following comments about referee's assistant Sian Massey. Gray was later sacked from his role with the broadcaster, with Keys resigning soon afterwards.

2014: Spain midfielder Juan Mata travelled to Manchester United to undergo a medical ahead of his £37.1million transfer from Chelsea.

2015: League One Bradford recovered from going two goals down to win 4-2 at Premier League leaders Chelsea in the FA Cup fourth round. Then-Championship Middlesbrough also produced a shock with a 2-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Michael Kightly (soccer) - Burnley winger, born 1986.

Luis Suarez (soccer) - Barcelona and Uruguay striker, formerly with Liverpool, born 1987.

Ki Sung-yueng (soccer) - Swansea's South Korea midfielder, born 1989.

Becky Downie (gymnastics) - European Championship and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, born 1992.
