1942: Billy Bremner, an integral part of Leeds' rise to the top of British football in the 1970s, was born. He died in December 1997.

1986: Greyhound Ballyregan Bob was retired by his owner-trainer George Curtis after he won a world record 32 races in a row.

2001: David Beckham won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

2004: Formula One chiefs struck a deal with Silverstone's owners to save the British Grand Prix. A five-year contract ended months of uncertainty and acrimony between the British Racing Drivers' Club and Bernie Ecclestone's F1 organisation.

2005: England drew Paraguay, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup finals.

2007: Floyd Mayweather stopped Ricky Hatton in the 10th round of their WBC welterweight title fight in Las Vegas, handing the Mancunian the first defeat of his professional career.

2008: Former England cricketer Chris Lewis was charged with attempted drug smuggling after four kilos of cocaine was seized at Gatwick Airport. He was jailed for 13 years at Croydon Crown Court in May 2009.

2010: Alan Pardew was confirmed as Newcastle manager on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

2012: Lionel Messi equalled Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year by scoring for Barcelona at Real Betis. He went on to score 91 in total.

2013: England were all out for 312 in Adelaide, suffering a 218-run defeat to Australia as the Ashes deficit grew to 2-0 with three matches to play. England would end up suffering a 5-0 whitewash.

2015: Swansea "very reluctantly" parted company with manager Garry Monk, who had been at the club as a player and coach for 11 years. He was replaced with Francesco Guidolin.
