1990: Record-breaking National Hunt trainer Martin Pipe saddled the 1,000th winner of his career when Catch The Cross came home first at Kempton.

1990: The smallest crowd - 625 people - ever to watch a Fourth Division match turned out to see Scarborough take on Wrexham at Seamer Road.

1997: Former Leeds and Scotland midfielder Billy Bremner died at the age of 54.

1999: The qualifying groups for the 2002 World Cup were drawn in Tokyo. England came up against Germany - the side who knocked them out of Euro 96 - as well as Finland, Greece and Albania. England famously beat Germany 5-1 in Munich in September 2001.

2004: Glenn Hoddle was appointed manager of Wolves.

2009: Silverstone agreed a new 17-year deal to host the British Grand Prix after Donington Park lost the rights.

2010: England won the second Ashes Test in Adelaide by an innings and 71 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

2011: Manchester United and Manchester City both crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages after being defeated by Basle and Bayern Munich respectively.

2014: Ronnie O'Sullivan fended off a dramatic Judd Trump comeback to win the UK Championship. A 10-9 victory gave 39-year-old O'Sullivan, who came to the tournament at York's Barbican Centre with a broken ankle, his fifth UK title - but he was made to sweat after leading 9-4.
