ON THIS DAY 

1897: Charles Jarrott, riding a Fournier, won the first motorcycle race around a track at Sheen House, Richmond.

1975: British racing driver Graham Hill was killed when the light aircraft he was piloting crashed onto Arkley golf course near Elstree in Hertfordshire. Also killed was Tony Brise, a promising young driver who was to spearhead Hill's new Embassy team.

2000: Stoke suffered their heaviest home defeat in 97 years, losing 8-0 to Liverpool in the League Cup.

2002: Martin Edwards resigned as non-executive director of Manchester United plc and announced he would leave his post as chairman at the end of the season.

2006: England rugby's head coach Andy Robinson stood down after a record of nine wins and 13 losses during his two years in charge.

2010: England drew the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. They went on to take the series 3-1 for their first Ashes success Down Under since 1986-87.

2011: Acting chief executive Martyn Thomas left the Rugby Football Union with immediate effect, having been criticised in the report into the hiring and firing of former chief executive John Steele. Stephen Brown took over in a temporary capacity.

2011: Republic of Ireland football manager Giovanni Trapattoni signed a contract extension running until the 2014 World Cup. The Italian left his post in September 2013.

2015: Great Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 as Andy Murray inspired a 3-1 success against Belgium.
