1878: Broughton and Swinton played in the first floodlit rugby match.

1966: England's David Bryant won the singles title at the inaugural World Bowls Championship in Sydney. The event was organised because the sport had been left out of that year's Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.

1972: The career of England and Stoke goalkeeper Gordon Banks was cut short when he lost an eye following a car crash near his home.

2000: Peter Taylor was put in temporary charge of England for the friendly against Italy.

2003: Sprinter Dwain Chambers denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. He was banned for two years the following February for taking tetrahydrogestrinone (THG).

2004: Adrian Mutu claimed he was tempted into taking drugs by the belief it would improve his sex life. He was soon to be sacked by Chelsea.

2005: Hearts parted company with manager George Burley, citing ''irreconcilable differences''.

2006: Canton Field in Boston hosted an unusual Ulster Hurling Championship final as New York, who had shocked Derry in the semi-final, played Antrim. The Saffrons won on a 2-20 to 1-14 scoreline.

2006: Fernando Alonso retained his F1 drivers' title with second place in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

2008: Galway woman Sinéad O’Connor was announced as ard stiúrthóir of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael.

2009: The All-Ireland Championship draw for 2010 pitted Derry against Armagh in the Ulster preliminary round.

2010: Wayne Rooney signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United, performing a major U-turn after saying he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

2012: Cycling's world governing body, the UCI, confirmed it had ratified the United States Anti-Doping Agency's decision to ban Lance Armstrong from cycling for life and to strip him of his seven Tour de France titles for doping offences.

2015: Jurgen Klopp's Anfield debut ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw for Liverpool against 10-man Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.
