On This Day - Oct 10 2012: United States Anti-Doping Agency report says seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is a 'serial cheat'

1991: The inaugural meeting of football's newly-formed Premier League was held.

2001: Australia cancelled their rugby league tour to Great Britain because of terrorism fears in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Six days later they reversed the decision.

2002: Sunderland appointed Howard Wilkinson as their new manager.

2003: Matthew Hayden scored a then-Test world record 380 for Australia against Zimbabwe in Perth.

2005: Director of football Velimir Zajec, who was caretaker manager between November 2004 and April 2005 after the departure of Harry Redknapp, resigned from Portsmouth just a year after joining the club.

2006: Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton was fined £2,000 and warned as to his future conduct by the Football Association after admitting a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute by dropping his shorts to Everton fans at Goodison Park.

2009: Leeds beat St Helens 18-10 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

2011: Nigel Worthington confirmed he would step down as Northern Ireland manager after the following day's game against Italy.

2012: The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released a report which described seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong as a "serial cheat" who led "the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen". Armstrong was later stripped of all his Tour titles.

2013: Legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar announced he would retire from all forms of cricket after playing his 200th Test in November.

2015: Wales qualified for their first major tournament since 1958 by securing passage to Euro 2016 despite a 2-0 defeat in Bosnia-Herzegovina; Leeds beat Wigan 22-20 in the Grand Final to clinch the treble.
