1895: The first US Open Golf Championship took place at Newport, Rhode Island. The winner was English-born Horace Rawlins with a total score of 173 from rounds of 91 and 82.

1989: Former England Test cricketer Norman Yardley died at the age of 74.

1991: Brian Clough's former right-hand man Peter Taylor died aged 62 while on holiday in Majorca. Taylor had worked with Clough at Hartlepool, Derby and Brighton before they ended their partnership.

2001: The Government scrapped plans to hold the World Athletics Championships in London in 2005.

2004: Manchester United's plc board confirmed they had received a ''preliminary approach'' regarding a ''possible offer'' for the company, thought to be from American tycoon Malcolm Glazer.

2008: Leeds beat St Helens 24-16 in the engage Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

2010: Playing on a Monday for the first time in the competition's history because of earlier rain, Europe won the Ryder Cup by 14 1/2 points to 13 1/2, beating the United States after Graeme McDowell defeated Hunter Mahan in the final match.

2015: Two Premier League managers left their jobs. Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool, while Dick Advocaat resigned as manager of Sunderland.
