On This Day - September 26 1981: 22-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams is born

1956: Manchester United beat Anderlecht 10-0 in the European Cup, making them the first British club to reach a double-figure score in any European competition.

1960: The first two games in football's League Cup were played, with Bristol Rovers taking on Fulham and West Ham meeting Charlton.

1965: Franz Beckenbauer made his international debut for West Germany. The defender went on to become his country's most famous captain and won 102 caps. He lifted the World Cup as a player in 1974 and won it as a manager in 1990.

1983: Australia II won the America's Cup from US yacht Liberty at Newport, Rhode Island. The trophy had been in the hands of the New York Yacht Club since the competition began in 1851.

2003: Malcolm Glazer, owner of Super Bowl champions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, increased his stake in Manchester United plc to 3.17 per cent. The American tycoon went on to take full ownership of the club. He died in May 2014, at the age of 85.

2006: An independent disciplinary commission suspended Jonathan Barnett's agent's licence for 18 months, nine months of which were suspended, and fined him £100,000 for breaching Football Association rules regarding illegal approaches following the Ashley Cole tapping-up case involving Chelsea. Barnett subsequently lost an appeal but had his ban reduced to 12 months.

2008: Newcastle confirmed Joe Kinnear as their interim manager until the end of October after Kevin Keegan's departure. Health problems forced Kinnear to stand down the following February, with the club ultimately suffering relegation to the Championship.

2010: Former Great Britain rugby league player Terry Newton was found dead at his home near Wigan.

2011: Hull KR confirmed Craig Sandercock as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

2013: FIFA suspended Jamaica midfielder Jermaine Hue for nine months after he tested positive for a banned substance. It also revoked a provisional suspension on an unnamed Bulgaria international for failing a drugs test just hours after imposing it.

2015: Wales beat England 28-25 at Twickenham in Pool A of the Rugby World Cup.
