ON THIS DAY 

1896: The first organised motorcycle race took place, involving eight riders on a 476-mile course from Paris to Nantes and back.

1947: Chris Marron of South Shields scored 10 goals against Radcliffe Borough in an FA Cup qualifying round game.

2004: Former Nottingham Forest and Derby manager Brian Clough died in hospital aged 69.

2005: Celtic captain Neil Lennon was given a three-match ban by the Scottish Football Association for barging into referee Stuart Dougal at the end of his side's 3-1 defeat to Rangers.

2007: Chelsea parted company with manager Jose Mourinho - for the first time - by mutual consent having won six trophies in three years at Stamford Bridge.

2009: England beat Australia by four wickets in the final one-day international series match at Chester-le-Street to avert a 7-0 whitewash.

2010: The England and Wales Cricket Board "completely rejected" an accusation by Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt that English players received "huge amounts of money" to lose the third one-day international against Pakistan. The ECB threatened Butt with legal action and he later withdrew the allegation.

2014: Durham beat Warwickshire by three wickets in the Royal London One-Day Cup final at Lord's.

2015: America won a controversial Solheim Cup, taking eight and a half points from 12 singles matches. Suzann Pettersen's failure to concede a short putt to Alison Lee in the fourballs had caused tension between the teams.

2015: Wales won their World Cup opener against Uruguay 54-9, but were hit by injuries to Cory Allen, Liam Williams and Paul James.
