1972: The most tragic Olympic Games opened in Munich. The Games were to be marred by the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes at the hands of terrorists.

2000: After being sent off twice in three days, Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira ended the week on a high with two goals in a 5-3 win over Charlton.

2004: American Shawn Crawford won 200 metres gold at the Olympics in Athens.

2007: American Tyson Gay won the gold medal in the men's 100 metres final at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka.

2008: England claimed a 10-wicket victory in the second one-day international against South Africa at Trent Bridge. They went on to win the series 4-0.

2009: Sir David Murray announced he was to step down as a board director and chairman of Rangers.

2011: QPR completed the signing of Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton on a four-year contract.

2014: Manchester United smashed the British transfer record as they signed Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7million. He lasted just one season at the club before joining Paris St Germain.

2015: Kenyans Joyce Zakary and Koki Manunga were the first athletes to fail drugs tests at the World Championships in Beijing.
