1957: Wales international John Charles moved from Leeds to Juventus for £65,000.

1996: Cyclist Chris Boardman won bronze for Great Britain in the individual time-trial at the Atlanta Olympics.

1997: American Maurice Greene won the World Championship 100 metres in Athens, equalling the championship record of 9.86 seconds.

1999: Arsenal completed the £10million signing of France striker Thierry Henry from Juventus.

2004: Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes announced his retirement from international football.

2008: Michael Vaughan stood down as England Test captain citing a need to take a break from the game. One-day skipper Paul Collingwood also relinquished his duties, with Kevin Pietersen taking on both roles. He resigned from the role just five months later following a dispute with then England coach Peter Moores, who was subsequently sacked.

2009: Former Bath players Michael Lipman, Alex Crockett and Andrew Higgins were suspended for nine months after failing to submit to drugs tests.

2012: There were Olympic gold medals for British rowers Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins (double sculls) and cyclists Victoria Pendleton (keirin) and Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh (team pursuit). Britain also won four bronze medals, while Jessica Ennis - now Ennis-Hill - broke the British record and the heptathlon world record for the 100m hurdles in 12.54 seconds.

2014: Lizzie Armitstead and Geraint Thomas won gold in the cycling road races on the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. England finished top of the medals table with 174, 58 of them gold.
