1884: Jack Dempsey beat George Fulljames by a knockout in the 22nd round at Staten Island, New York to win the world middleweight title - the first fight under Queensberry Rules.

1930: The first football World Cup came to a close with hosts Uruguay beating rivals Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo.

1966: England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time in the World Cup final at Wembley, with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick.

1990: England captain Graham Gooch finished with 456 runs in the match against India at Lord's, hitting 123 in his second innings having scored 333 in the first.

2000: Galway defeated Leitrim 1-13 to 0-8 in the Connacht Senior Football Championship final at Dr.Hyde Park, Roscommon. 

2005: Cork beat Sligo 3-13 to 0-11 in a Round 4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise.

2006: World Anti-Doping Agency chairman Dick Pound revealed Olympic 100 metres champion Justin Gatlin's B sample, for prohibited levels of testosterone, was positive.

2006: Donegal beat Fermanagh 0-11 to 0-8 in a Round 4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier at Brewster Park, Enniskillen.

2011: Stuart Broad took a hat-trick for England in the second Test against India at Trent Bridge. England won the four-Test series 4-0.

2011: Donegal beat Kildare 1-12 to 0-14 A.E.T an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-final at Croke Park, Dublin.

2012: Great Britain won their first men's Olympic gymnastics team medal in a century when they claimed bronze in London. Louis Smith, Max Whitlock, Daniel Purvis, Sam Oldham and Kristian Thomas had initially been awarded silver but an inquiry into the score of Kohei Uchimura's pommel horse routine saw Japan claim silver and Britain downgraded to bronze.

2014: Everton signed Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea for a club-record fee of £28million.

2015: UK Athletics' investigation into Mo Farah's coach Alberto Salazar found "no evidence of impropriety" on the part of the double Olympic champion distance runner.
