1906: The first motor racing Grand Prix, the French Grand Prix, was run at Le Mans - with Romanian Ferenc Szisz driving a Renault to victory at an average speed of 63mph.

1954: The highest-scoring match in the final stages of the World Cup was recorded in the quarter-finals of the competition in Lausanne. Host nation Switzerland were beaten 7-5 by neighbours Austria.

1959: Ingemar Johansson stopped Floyd Patterson in the third round at Yankee Stadium, New York, to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

1998: England moved into the second round of the World Cup in France with a 2-0 win over Colombia thanks to goals from Darren Anderton and David Beckham.

2003: Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe died after collapsing during a Confederations Cup match against Colombia in Lyon. Foe was 28.

2006: Athletics governing body IAAF announced all Dwain Chambers' performances from January 1, 2002 had been annulled after the sprinter admitted he had been using performance-enhancing drugs since that time.

2009: Manchester United and Real Madrid finalised an agreement for the £80million transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Spanish club with effect from July 1.

2014: FIFA announced Uruguay striker Luis Suarez would be suspended for nine international matches and banned from all football activity for four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in their World Cup encounter.
