1814: The MCC and Hertfordshire played the first match at the present-day Lord's, after the original ground laid by Sir Thomas Lord was moved to the St John's Wood site it still occupies.

1937: Joe Louis knocked out defending champion James J Braddock in Chicago to become world heavyweight champion.
