1969: Three-time Wimbledon champion Maureen Connolly, the first woman to win tennis' Career Grand Slam, died of cancer at the age of 34.
1970: Tony Jacklin became the first British golfer since Ted Ray in 1920 to win the US Open with victory at Hazeltine, Minnesota.
1975: West Indies, captained by Clive Lloyd, beat Australia by 17 runs at Lord's to win the first cricket World Cup.
2002: Brazil beat England 2-1 in Shizuoka to progress to the World Cup semi-final. Michael Owen put England ahead early on but Rivaldo equalised and Ronaldinho scored with a 40-yard free-kick.
2007: Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, through his bid vehicle UK Sports Investments, lodged a formal £81.6million bid for Manchester City.
