1933: The FA Cup final between Everton and Manchester City was the first final where players had shirt numbers. The Everton players were numbered one to 11, while City were numbered 12 to 22.

1967: Muhammad Ali was stripped of his world heavyweight title for refusing to be drafted into the US Army on religious grounds.

1970: Chelsea beat Leeds 2-1 after extra time to win the first replay of a Wembley FA Cup final.

1990: Stephen Hendry defeated Jimmy White 18-12 to become the youngest world snooker champion at the age of 21 years and 106 days.

2003: Former Chelsea and Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich was banned for nine months by the Football Association after a disciplinary hearing into his failed drugs test for cocaine.

2006: Chelsea won back-to-back Premier League titles after beating Manchester United 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. United striker Wayne Rooney suffered a broken metatarsal in the game, but was nevertheless later named in England's World Cup squad.

2007: Sam Allardyce resigned as Bolton manager after eight years at the club. He was later appointed as Newcastle boss but endured an ill-fated reign which ended the following January.

2008: Manchester United reached the Champions League final, winning 1-0 against Barcelona at Old Trafford for a 1-0 aggregate victory.

2009: McLaren were handed a suspended three-race ban by the World Motor Sport Council after being charged with five counts of breaching the International Sporting Code over the 'lie-gate' scandal which hit the team at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

2013: Joe Schmidt was confirmed as the new Ireland head coach on a three-year deal, succeeding Declan Kidney who was removed earlier in the month after a dismal RBS 6 Nations campaign.

2013: Jason Collins became the first active player in the NBA to come out as gay.

George McCartney (soccer) - Former Sunderland, West Ham and Northern Ireland defender, born 1981.

Jay Cutler (gridiron) - Chicago Bears quarterback, born 1983

Barry McGoldrick (gaelic games): the Eoghan Rua, Coleraine footballer, is a former captain of the Derry senior squad and has won a National League title, born 1985.

Sara Errani (tennis) - French Open finalist in 2012, born 1987.
