ON THIS DAY

1923: Bolton and West Ham contested the first FA Cup final at Wembley. Official receipts gave the attendance as 126,047 but it is estimated more than 200,000 were in the ground. A single policeman on a white horse famously kept the crowd back from the pitch. Bolton won the game 2-0.

1998: West Brom terminated the contract of defender Shane Nicholson following his admission of a drugs misconduct charge at a Football Association hearing.

2006: Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari claimed he had withdrawn from the race to become England manager after the World Cup. Steve McClaren eventually took over following the departure of Sven-Goran Eriksson.

2007: Australia won a historic third cricket World Cup in a row, defeating Sri Lanka by 53 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method in Barbados.

2009: Stephen Hendry scored his second Crucible maximum, in a 13-11 quarter-final defeat by Shaun Murphy.

2012: Fermanagh lost out in the GAA National Football League Division 4 Final, eights points separating them from Wicklow at the final whistle. It finished 2-16 to 1-11 in front of a crowd of 7,5144 at Croke Park in Dublin. Scorers were: Wicklow: S Furlong (1-5), T Hannon (0-4), R Finn (0-3), C Hyland (1-0), J Stafford (0-2), L Glynn (0-2)
