St Patrick's, Dungannon and Cavan to meet in Brock final

Danske Bank Brock Cup semi-finals: St Patrick's, Cavan 1-13 Omagh CBS

0-15; St Patrick’s, Dungannon 2-11 St Patrick’s, Maghera 3-7

THERE will be a replay between the teams that contested last season’s Danske Bank Corn na nÓg final in next week’s Brock Cup decider. Both the St Patrick’s schools of Dungannon and Cavan edged out Maghera and Omagh CBS by single point margins in the Brock semi-finals on Wednesday.

The Academy looked to be heading for an easy victory when they led by 1-8 to 0-3 at the break and then by 2-11 to 0-5 after 40 minutes. But Maghera reeled them in with the help of goals from Eunan Mulholland, JP McGuigan and Shea Murray and the Academy were just relieved to hear the final whistle.

That was in contrast to the early part of the game, with Michael Conroy blasting home a first-half penalty, to which he and Louis Conlon added two points each. Then, a high ball from Tomas McCormick into the Maghera area in the 40th minute ricocheted off a couple of players and ended up in the back of the net.

Amazingly, that was the Acacdemy’s last score as Shea Murray and Sean Turner drove the Derry school forward for the last 20 minutes, with the Academy’s backs firmly against the wall. They will meet 2015 Corn na nÓg champions St Patrick’s, Cavan, who struggled for a good bit of the opening half, despite a goal and two points from Paddy McPhillips.

Omagh made most of the running before half-time, with three points from Liam Gray and two each from Daniel Fullerton and Aodhan McConnell putting them in 0-9 to 1-3 ahead at the break. Cavan ate into their lead as the second-half progressed, with seven different players making the scoresheet, including Shane Cosgrove, whose late point puts them into the decider.

St Patrick’s, Maghera 3-9 St Macartan’s, Monaghan 2-3

A PENALTY goal in the 52nd minute from nippy corner-forward John McGovern was the turning point in this well-contested Danske Bank Dalton Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

St Patrick’s, Cavan had led Abbey CBS from the start, with four points from Evan Kelly putting them into an interval lead of 0-6 to 0-3. Abbey narrowed the gap as the second-half wore on, but McGovern’s goal from the spot put them in front for the first time, 1-7 to 0-8, and he added another point close to the end as they held on to set up a final date with St Patrick’s, Maghera.

The Derry side were always in control of their tie, with St Macartan’s, Monaghan, Tiarnan Higgins’ goal giving them a lead of 1-6 to 0-1 at the break. Michael Mulholland, who finished with 1-3, and Shea Cassidy both hit the net during the second-half.

Meanwhile, Patrician, Carrickmacross are scoring well in their search for a third Colleges’ title this season. They scored 3-14 to Keady’s 2-10 in a Danske Bank Treanor Cup quarter-final played on Monday and, in the semi-final, play Holy Trinity Cookstown, the team they defeated in the MacLarnon decider on St Patrick’s Day.

The other semi-final pits St Eunan’s, Letterkenny against St Ronan’s, Lurgan. St Eunan’s needed extra-time on Wednesday to reach the semi-final of Corn Cholmchille after a fantastic game with Keady that finished on a 3-7 to 3-6 scoreline.

They now have a derby semi-final with St Columb’s, Derry, while there could be plenty of goals in the other one. St Louis', Ballymena (8) and Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s, Knock (7) racked up 15 between them in their quarter-final ties.
