1926: Sir Jack Brabham, the Australian three-time Formula One world champion and the only driver in the sport's history to win the championship in a car of his own construction, was born. He died on May 19, 2014, aged 88.

1955: Duncan Edwards, one of Manchester United's famous 'Busby Babes', made his first appearance for England in a 7-2 victory over Scotland at Wembley. He was killed three years later in the Munich air disaster.

1977: Red Rum won his record third Grand National, winning by 25 lengths from Churchtown Boy. Charlotte Brew, on Barony Fort, became the first woman to take part in the race.

1993: Jonathan Davies kicked a record 10 goals as Great Britain's rugby league team set a new Test best victory of 72-6, against France at Swinton.

2002: Moneyglass-born Tony McCoy broke Sir Gordon Richards's 55-year record for winners in a season when he recorded his 270th win of the campaign at Warwick.

2003: Wimbledon received final approval from the Football League for their temporary move to the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes.

2009: Sven-Goran Eriksson was sacked as coach of the Mexico national team.

2010: India won the World Cup by beating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final in Mumbai.

2011: Down lost out to Dublin at Croke Park in Division One of the National Football League on a 2-13 to 0-13 score line. Paul Flynn and Alan Brogan grabbed Dublin's goals. Scorers as follwos:

2012: Gavin Henson was sacked by Cardiff Blues for his drunken behaviour on a flight from Glasgow to Cardiff.
