1889: Test cricket was played in South Africa for the first time. The host nation, led by OR Dunnell, hosted the England team, captained by C Aubrey Smith, in the first of two Tests at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth. 

1938: The BBC televised its first athletics meeting when it covered the annual Oxford versus Cambridge match. 

1991: Wendy Toms made history as the first woman to officiate at a Football League game. She was selected as the fourth official for a Third Division match between Bournemouth and Reading. 

2000: Forty-one-year-old Neville Southall appeared in goal for Bradford after regular goalkeeper Matt Clarke fell down the stairs at home. 

2003: Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy took charge of Premier League strugglers Sunderland, becoming the third manager of the Wearside club in a season that ended in relegation. 

2006: Down’s 100 per cent record in Division 1B came to an end in unusual fashion as Laois goalkeeper Fergal Bryon came forward to stroke home a penalty to give Mick O’Deyer’s side a five-point victory.



2009: Ulster GAA launched their 2009-2015 strategic plan at the Stormont Hotel with plans to further hurling in the province high on the agenda.

2010: Greg Clarke was appointed as the new chairman of the Football League.

2011: The scheduled Division Two clash between Tyrone and Antrim at Healy Park was postponed due to snow. The teams would meet the following day with Tyrone winning on a 1-16 to 1-11 scoreline. 



2014: Cavan’s bid for a fourth Ulster U21 title in a row got off to a good start as they defeated Derry 3-10 to 0-12 in the preliminary round, Joe Dillon, Enda Flanagan and Paul Graham with their goals.
