On This Day - Mar 11 1978: Soccer striker Didier Drogba is born

Drogba scored twice as Chelsea won 3-2 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate to sweep into their first Champions League final. 1885: Malcolm Campbell was born. He became the first man to build a machine specifically to set new land and water speed records and was the first to travel at more than 300mph on land. His son Donald would later adapt the craft which was called 'Bluebird'. Campbell Sr died in December 1948.

1928: Louise Brough was born. The American tennis player went on to win 35 grand slam titles, 10 at Wimbledon - including the singles four times between 1948 and 1955. Brough died in February 2014.

1990: At 13 years and 347 days old, Jennifer Capriati reached the final of the Virginia Slims in Florida to become the youngest player ever to do so in a professional tournament. Gabriela Sabatini, who beat her in the final, had previously held the same record - aged 14 years and 11 months.

1990: Seve Ballesteros won his 60th European Tour event, the Balearic Open at Son Vida.

2005: Kevin Keegan parted company with Manchester City, with Stuart Pearce taking over as manager.

2006: Rangers confirmed Frenchman Paul Le Guen had agreed a three-year deal to take over as manager at Ibrox from the end of the season.

2008: Cricket Australia postponed their tour to Pakistan due to security concerns in the country.

2011: Three Ulster sides in the GAA National Football League Division One action, two took a hammering. Armagh went under to Dublin 4-17 to 1-10 at Croke Park while Kerry dumped Donegal 2-16 to 1-8  at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. Only Down managed to keep the Ulster flag flying with 1-13 to 0-11 victory over Mayo at McHale Park, Castlebar, Conor Maginn's goal critical to the victory which ended Mayo’s winning run.

2014: Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was handed a seven-match suspension for his headbutt on Hull player David Meyler.

Johnny Jameson (soccer): former Northern Ireland international, he played for Glentoran. During his club career the Belfast star played for Bangor, Huddersfield Town, Linfield, and Glentoran, born 1958

John O'Neill (soccer); former Northern Ireland international, made 17 appearances, debut in 1982 in 0-0 away draw with Israel, born 1958

Eddie Lawson (motorcycling) - American who dominated world 500cc racing in the 1980s, born 1958.

John Neal (soccer): Former Republic of Ireland international at World Youth Championships in Russia in 1985, born 1966

Thomas Gravesen (soccer) - former Denmark, Everton and Celtic midfielder, born 1976.

Paul Scharner (soccer) - Former Wigan and Austria utility player, born 1980.

Didier Drogba (soccer) - Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker, now playing for Montreal Impact in the MLS, born 1978.

Albert Luque (soccer) - former Newcastle, Deportivo La Coruna and Spain striker, born 1978.

Jack Rodwell (soccer) - Sunderland midfielder, born 1991.

Ajantha Mendis (cricket) - Sri Lanka bowler, born 1985.
