ON THIS DAY

1962: Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors became the first and only man to score 100 points in a National Basketball Association (NBA) game. Philadelphia beat the New York Knicks 169-147 in front of a crowd of 4,124.

1996: Nigel Benn announced his retirement after losing the WBC super-middleweight title to South Africa's Thulani 'Sugarboy' Malinga, although the British fighter returned to the ring later in the year.

1998: With Manchester United 11 points ahead of Arsenal, who had two away games in hand, one Manchester bookmaker paid out on United to take the Premiership title. However, Arsenal then recorded 10 wins in a row to become champions.

2004: Cormac McAnallen passed away suddenly as a result of an undetected heart condition. The 24-year-old had been an All-star full back on the first Tyrone team to clinch the Sam Maguire in 2003.

2004: Ken Bates stood down as Chelsea chairman after 22 years at the club.

2005: Ian Woosnam was confirmed as Ryder Cup captain for the 2006 event at The K Club in Ireland. At the same time, Nick Faldo was selected to lead the team in the 2008 event in Louisville, Kentucky.

2010: Shay Given and Kevin Kilbane both made their 103rd appearances for the Republic of Ireland in a 0-2 friendly defeat to Brazil - edging them ahead of Steve Staunton as Ireland's most capped players.

2011: Ireland's Kevin O'Brien hit the fastest century in World Cup history to set up a stunning three-wicket victory over England. O'Brien blasted a 50-ball ton, eventually being dismissed for 113, as Ireland successfully chased down England's 327 for eight in Bangalore.

2013: Shinji Kagawa scored a hat-trick as Manchester United went 15 points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with a 4-0 win over Norwich at Old Trafford.

2014: Manchester City produced a devastating second-half comeback to beat Sunderland 3-1 in the Capital One Cup final. Goals from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas turned the game on its head after on-loan Liverpool striker Fabio Borini gave Sunderland an early lead at Wembley.
