Dunne earns US Amateur place

PAUL DUNNE'S eye-catching performance at the Open has earned him a place in the US Amateur Championship later this month.

The 22-year-old Dubliner, who began the final round at St Andrew's in a share of the lead, has been given special exemption by the United States Golf Association for the August 17-23 event.

"Paul Dunne demonstrated his ability to compete with anyone by his outstanding play in the recent British Open at St Andrew's," said Diana M Murphy, chair of the USGA's Championship Committee.

"The USGA is pleased that he will be joining the strong international field of 312 players in the US Amateur, our oldest national championship, at Olympia Fields."

Dunne, who intends turning professional later this year, will also compete in his first US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits next week.
