Riverine 10K to begin in Lifford

Malcolm McCausland

THE launch of the third annual Riverine 10K took place took place this week. The cross-border race will take place on Sunday, August 9 with a 10am start. A large group from the host Lifford AC club were in attendance at the launch, which was held at The Travellers Rest, Strabane, generous sponsors of this years event.

When this race was inaugurated in 2013, it was the first cross-border race of its kind in the country, a unique initiative that promoted cross-border, cross-community participation through sport.

Little did the organisers know then that not only would the race prove to be an outstanding success in the first two years, but it would also be the spark for the Strabane-Lifford Half Marathon which attracted huge crowds this year.

Last year, Lifford AC secretary Brendan O’Donnell received lots of positive feedback, not just about the event and the atmosphere, but also for the fact this is an incredibly flat course where fast times and personal bests are almost guaranteed.

This year, a €200 bonus is on offer to the first man to run under 31 minutes and for the first woman under 34:30. Last year City of Derry athlete Declan Reed and current Irish international Ann Marie McGlynn set course records with 31:09 and 34:41 respectively.

Chip-timing will be in operation guaranteeing accurate with timely results and an early prize giving. As with all Lifford AC organised races, the course has been measured by a certified Athletics Ireland Official, with a Certificate of Measurement given for the course.

There are age group prizes up for grabs and in addition the first 300 entrants will receive a specially designed quality tech T-Shirt. Registration is now available through the Lifford AC and Athletics Ireland web sites.Further information and updates will be available through the Riverine 10K Facebook page or contact Race Director Brendan O’Donnell on 00 353 866007847.

HARRIERS ADVANCING IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS
Mallusk Harriers have made rapid strides in recent years since its foundation five years ago by former Annadale Strider Gary Stitt. With a growing membership and a huge number graduating from its Couch to 5K programme, things could not be going better for the north Belfast outfit who are based at the Academy Club, Mallusk Playing Fields.

“We struggled in the early days and were attended by two men a dog. Literally!” said club PRO Alex Davidson.

“However in late 2013 we had an influx of members and numbers have grown steadily since. We now have over 85 members and a Senior and Junior section.

“We have just completed our first Couch to 5k programme with over 80 runners graduating. Some of whom have joined the club and are now heading towards their first 10k.”

The progressive club is now busy organising it annual five-mile road on Friday, August 21.

Last year’s event saw Willowfield’s Brian Campbell win the men’s race with Cathy McCourt claiming the honour of first woman across the finish line.
