Number 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams have progressed in straight sets to the second round of Wimbledon.

On the first day of the tournament, the defending men's singles champion faced a potentially hazardous opponent in Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, but progressed 6-4 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.

Djokovic didn't have it all his own way though, and struggled his way through the first set in particular. It was, however, the 28-year-old's first competitive match on a grass court this season so a slow start was not unexpected.

Fellow World no.1 Serena Williams entered Wimbledon with the opportunity to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win the first three Grand Slams in the tennis season.

In Williams' first-round match against Russia's Margarita Gasparyan, she progressed 6-4 6-1. Like Djokovic she was rusty in the first set, at one stage trailing 3-1 to the Wimbledon rookie, but quickly focused to ease home in straight sets.

Also, British wildcard Liam Broady has sprung an early shock in his opening match, defeating Australia's Marinko Matosevic 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3 in his first ever Grand Slam victory.
