Leona earns her reward for stellar rookie season
LEONA Maguire (right) has had an amazing first season at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, culminating in being honoured with both the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player and Freshman of the Year awards writes Tony McGee.
With both the 12-strong Duke college team and individually, the Cavan girl has been burning up courses all season.
She was twice Golfer of the Month and now enters the NCAA Regionals after posting a 69.70 stroke average in her last four tournaments. She carded five rounds out of 10 in the sixties. The Maguire twin has returned 19 rounds of par or better with two victories, including the ACC Championship title, to her credit. She has had seven top five and eight top 10 finishes. Leona's awards were voted on by the 11 coaches in the ACC.
The Slieve Russell member becomes only the fourth player in Duke history to be named both Player and Rookie of the year and she is currently the top-ranked player in American women's college golf. Her stroke average of 70.68 is a Duke record.
