Strachan cool on Griffiths chances

SCOTLAND manager Gordon Strachan appeared to play down the resurgence of Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths when asked about his international prospects.

Griffiths (above) has netted 14 goals in his last 17 matches - including two hat-tricks in the last two weeks - to take his overall tally for the season to 18. The 24-year-old has made himself Ronny Deila's main striker since mid-January and will be hoping to force his way back into Strachan's squad for the European Championship qualifier against Republic of Ireland on June 13. Strachan stressed the former Wolves and Hibernian forward was in his thoughts but pointed out his upturn in form was fairly recent. When asked whether Griffiths had played himself into the squad after standing out this season, Strachan said: "He has been substitute up until maybe six games ago. His form in the last two months probably, he can be pleased with, and so can Celtic. "I think if you ask him about his form previous to that, it might not be as good as now. He has come good at the right time."
