NUI Galway chalked up a remarkable double at UUJ with victory in both the Men's A and Women's B basketball Inter-Varsities' Championships finals, while Trinity College won the Women's A decider to add to their League Cup win last month, writes Tony McGee. The Galway men eked out a 77-69 final victory over hosts University of Ulster. UUJ fought back down the stretch to be only six points adrift, having been 20 behind, but the taller western students held off the late challenge for their eight-point win. Kenneth Hansberry's physicality and combination with American Darryl Durham gave the westerners a strong start as UUJ struggled.

NUIG's women, who were relegated last year, lost little time in climbing back up again with an easy 77-44 defeat of Dublin IT in the B final.

It was Trinity's first success in the Women's A competition, as they eased out Cork IT by 49-45 in an exciting finish, helped by a game high 28 points, including six 'threes', by Christine Ganser.

Griffith College made it a Dublin double, beating IT Carlow 77-60 to seal the Men's B title.
