Commercial greed hits Bass stocks

SIMON Everett (Sea Fishing Magazine) makes some interesting points about the current Bass debate in the EU.

He believes that the Common Fishery Policy (CFP) is run by the Spanish and French industrial fishing conglomerates and they have massive political clout.

He adds that to see any improvement in our fishing, better fish stocks are a fundamental prerequisite. In other words, change the focus of sea fisheries management away from the commercial sector. They should feel privileged they are allowed to make a living from the fish that everyone else has part ownership of.

Imagine if builders were allowed to run riot with chainsaws, cutting down prime trees under the pretext that "it is their livelihood" and others who enjoy the trees don't matter.

There would be uproar, and so there should be over how the fish in the sea are being greedily hoovered up for the benefit of a few.
