Holy Trinity lead way at finals

FIGHTERS from Holy Trinity ABC dominate tonight's Ulster Elite Championships finals programme at the Dockers Club.

There are eight boxers from the west Belfast stable in action on the 10-bout card and the absence of several long-standing champions means there will be at least five new winner in the men's ranks.

One of those has already been crowned as St Paul's clubman Brendan Irvine has a walkover in the light-flyweight final.

At lightweight Connor Kerr (Spartan's) meets Gerard Mathews (St Paul's), while at flyweight TJ Waite, a finalist at light-fly last year, will take on Canal ABC's Jason McKay.

At middleweight, Holy Trinity pair Taylor McGoldrick and Caoimhin Hynes battle it out in the absence of holder Conor Coyle, and there will be a new champion at heavyweight too where Stephen Ward has stepped aside, leaving Stephen McMonagle (Holy Trinity) and Thomas Copeland (Dockers) to slug it out.

Meanwhile, four reigning champions will defend the crowns they won last year. Kurt Walker (bantamweight), Sean Duffy (light-welter), Padraig McCrory (light-heavy) and super-heavyweight Jason Barron are all in action while Conor Doherty, who lost to Stephen Donnelly in last year's final, is out to win the welterweight title when he takes on Immaculata's JD Meli.

Light-heavyweight champion McCrory beat Sean McGlinchey last year but later lost a box-off that meant the Derry man went to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

McCrory was fighting out of the Gleann club back then but has since moved to Holy Trinity. He feels that the switch has breathed life back into his career.

"It's been a bitter-sweet year but I try to keep looking forward to the future, not think too much about last year and stay positive," he said.

"The coaching at Holy Trinity is top class and there's brilliant sparring - I'm enjoying it again.

"Moving wasn't anything to do with the club, they were brilliant to me up in Gleann, but I just felt a bit flat and I needed something different."

He takes on Ryan Donnelly (Two Castles), who lost narrowly to Stephen O'Reilly at this stage two years ago.

"I saw him for the first time on Tuesday night," he said.

"He was very good - he's a small southpaw and he's quick so I'm expecting a very hard fight. It's the Irish seniors a couple of weeks after this so I need a good, hard fight to see where I am.

"I'm very confident, but I'm not taking it for granted either."

There is only one contest in the women's finals tonight with walkovers in three divisions.

Cavan ABC's Ceire Smith takes over from Commonwealth Games gold medallist Michaela Walsh as bantamweight champion.

At light-welterweight, Alanna Audley-Murphy has stepped aside and Carly McNauly takes the title.

Sarah Close, who lost to Audley-Murphy at 60kg last year, moves up to welter where she takes on Holy Family's Joanna Barclay.

At heavyweight Fiona Nelson (City of Belfast Boxing Academy) is the walkover winner in the absence of Raphoe's Caroline Connolly.
