Farah the favourite in Great North Run

BRITAIN'S Mo Farah starts hot favourite to win the BUPA Great North Run in the north east of England on Sunday morning (live on BBC One, 9.30am)

Last year Farah was outsprinted in the final 100 metres by Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele after Haile Gebrselassie stepped aside to give his compatriot a clear run for the line.

Farah, who clocked 60:10 last year, will be looking to go one better on this occasion and become the first British man to win the race since Steve Kenyon triumphed in 1985.

In the absence of Bekele on Sunday, his younger brother Tariku will be hoping to keep the men's title in the family. Although outshone on the track by Kenenisa, who has three Olympic gold medals and 16 world titles, Tariku is a world class athlete in his own right.

The London Olympics 10,000m bronze medallist has only run the distance on three previous occasions, including a fifth in the Great Birmingham Run a personal best of 62:59. Three-time Antrim International winner Mike Kigen is also in the field.

The women's field is arguably better and Tirunesh Dibaba, who is one of the fastest ever for the distance, will be looking to regain the title she last won two years ago.
